How it works

Monthly total = Σ monthly subs + yearly subs ÷ 12 · Yearly total = monthly total × 12

Subscriptions are engineered to be forgotten: each one is small enough to ignore, but they stack into a meaningful monthly outflow that renews automatically whether you use it or not. Converting yearly plans to a monthly figure (divide by 12) and totaling everything reveals the real number. Seeing the five-year cost — and the share of your income it consumes — is often the jolt that prompts a cancel-audit of the services you no longer use.

Worked example

Adding $45 streaming, $25 apps, $40 gym, $15 news and $20 other gives $145 a month, plus a $120 yearly plan ($10/month) for $155 total. That is $1,860 a year, about 3.9% of a $4,000 monthly take-home, and $9,300 over five years.

Frequently asked questions

How do I include annual subscriptions?

Enter their combined yearly cost in the yearly field; the calculator divides by 12 to fold them into the monthly total. That keeps annual plans — which are easy to forget precisely because they bill only once a year — from being undercounted.

What is a reasonable amount to spend on subscriptions?

There is no fixed rule, but many budgeting frameworks fold subscriptions into the "wants" bucket. If they are crowding out savings or you cannot name what each one is for, that is the signal to trim. Watching the share-of-income figure helps keep it in check.

How can I cut subscription costs?

Audit the list quarterly and cancel anything unused, rotate seasonal streaming services instead of holding all at once, share family plans, and switch to annual billing only for services you are certain to keep — annual plans are cheaper per month but lock in a year of spending.
