Subtract Time Calculator
Subtract hours and minutes from a start time to find the earlier clock time, with previous-day rollover handled.
How it works
end minutes = start minutes − (hours × 60 + minutes) · clock = end mod 1440 · day shift = ⌊end ÷ 1440⌋
The start time becomes minutes since midnight, the offset is subtracted, and the result is folded back onto the 24-hour clock with a modulo. When the subtraction drops below midnight, the whole-day part of the division goes negative and the "Day" row flags the previous day. This is the reliable way to answer "what time was it N hours ago" without slipping across the AM/PM line.
Worked example
Start at 17:30 and subtract 2 hours 15 minutes: 17:30 is 1,050 minutes, minus 135 minutes is 915 minutes, which is 3:15 PM the same day.
Frequently asked questions
What if I subtract past midnight?
The clock wraps to the evening hours and the "Day" row shows "previous day". For instance 01:00 minus 3 hours reads 10:00 PM, previous day.
How do I find how long ago something was?
This tool takes a known time and steps backward by a fixed amount. To measure the gap between two clock times instead, use the hours-between-times calculator.
Can the minutes field be over 59?
Yes. Sixty or more minutes simply borrow into hours, so entering 90 minutes is the same as 1 hour 30 minutes.
