How it works

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight(kg) × minutes ÷ 200 (MET set by stroke and intensity)

Swimming is one of the higher-burn activities because water resistance forces the whole body to work and heat loss adds a small extra cost. Each stroke and intensity has its own MET value — from about 6 for easy laps to nearly 14 for butterfly — which the standard MET equation combines with your body weight and time in the water. Heavier swimmers and harder strokes burn more.

Worked example

A 70 kg swimmer doing 30 minutes of moderate freestyle at 8.3 METs burns (8.3 × 3.5 × 70 × 30) ÷ 200 = 61,005 ÷ 200 ≈ 305 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

Which stroke burns the most calories?

Butterfly has the highest MET value (about 13.8) because it is the most demanding, followed by vigorous freestyle and breaststroke around 10. Backstroke and easy freestyle are lower. Intensity within a stroke matters as much as the stroke itself.

Why does swimming burn so many calories?

Water is far denser than air, so moving through it takes more effort, and it engages large muscle groups across the whole body at once. Your body also spends a little energy maintaining temperature in cooler water.

Are MET estimates exact?

No — they are population averages. Your technique and efficiency have a big effect in the water: a skilled swimmer glides further per stroke and may burn less than a struggling beginner at the same nominal pace.
