Swing Set Clearance Calculator
Size the safe use zone around a swing set — the fall space in front and behind, based on the swing beam height — before you install it.
How it works
Fall zone (each direction) = 2·pivot height · Total depth = 4·pivot height · Total width = set width + 2·side zone
Swings throw a child forward and back, so the use zone in the swinging direction is much deeper than for static equipment — playground guidance sets it at twice the pivot height in each direction, since a swing arc reaches out roughly that far at speed. The sides need a fixed buffer of around 1.8 m beyond the frame. The whole rectangle should be soft ground or loose-fill surfacing, clear of walls, paths and other equipment.
Worked example
A swing with its beam 240 cm high needs 2·240 = 480 cm clear in front and the same behind — 960 cm of depth. With a 300 cm frame and 180 cm side zones, the use zone is 960×660 cm, about 63 m².
Frequently asked questions
Why is the clearance so much bigger in front of a swing?
Because a swing arcs outward. Playground safety guidance sets the fall zone at twice the pivot height in the direction of travel, so a child who lets go or falls mid-swing lands on clear, cushioned ground.
What should the ground under a swing be?
Loose-fill or rubber safety surfacing deep enough for the equipment height — bark, wood chips, sand or rubber tiles — never bare concrete or packed earth, across the whole use zone.
How far from a fence or wall should a swing set be?
Keep the full fall zone clear, which for a typical set means roughly 3–5 metres in front and behind and about 1.8 metres to each side, away from fences, trees and other equipment.
