How it works

For each distinct value: count = number of times it appears · share = count ÷ total × 100%

A frequency count records how many times each distinct value appears in a list. Grouping identical entries and counting them turns a raw list into a summary table, and dividing each count by the total gives its share of the whole. The value with the highest count is the mode — the most common entry.

Worked example

For apple, apple, banana, cherry, apple, banana there are 6 values in total. “apple” appears 3 times (50%), “banana” twice (33.3%) and “cherry” once (16.7%), so the most common value is apple.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with words as well as numbers?

Yes. Values are treated as plain text tokens, so it tallies words, categories, letters or numbers equally. Matching is exact, so “Apple” and “apple” are counted separately.

What is the difference between count and share?

The count is how many times a value appears; the share is that count as a percentage of the total number of values. The shares across all rows add up to 100%.

What if several values tie for most common?

The table lists every value with its count, sorted from most to least frequent, so any ties are visible together at the top. The headline picks the first of the tied values alphabetically.
