Towing Capacity Margin Calculator
Check how much towing capacity you have left after your trailer and cargo, and whether you are within a safe margin.
How it works
Remaining = max towing − (trailer + cargo); aim to stay under 80% of max
Add the trailer’s empty weight and everything loaded in it, then compare to the vehicle’s rated towing capacity. Staying under about 80% keeps a safety margin for hills, braking and stability.
Worked example
A 5,000 lb rating with a 2,200 lb trailer and 1,500 lb cargo uses 74% — safe, with 1,300 lb to spare.
Frequently asked questions
Why not tow at 100%?
Ratings are limits, not targets. A margin protects braking, transmission temps and handling, especially on grades.
Does tongue weight matter too?
Yes — tongue weight (usually 10–15% of trailer weight) has its own limit and affects stability. Check it separately.
