How it works

Transition budget = Target finish − (Swim + Bike + Run) · Suggested split T1 : T2 = 40% : 60%

Transitions are "free time" that quietly eats into a triathlon result, so budgeting them backward from a target finish keeps your plan honest. Subtract your realistic swim, bike and run splits from the goal time and whatever remains is all you have for T1 and T2 combined. The 40/60 split reflects that the bike-to-run change (racking, shoes, hat, gels) usually takes a little longer than the swim-to-bike change; a negative budget means your splits alone already blow past the target.

Worked example

Targeting 2:20:00 (140 min) with a 15-minute swim, 70-minute bike and 50-minute run leaves 140 − 135 = 5 minutes for transitions — about 2:00 for T1 and 3:00 for T2 under a 40/60 split.

Frequently asked questions

How long should triathlon transitions take?

It varies with distance and skill: sprint-race transitions can be under a minute each for experienced athletes, while long-course transitions with wetsuit strips and nutrition can run several minutes. This tool shows the budget your goal time allows, not a fixed target.

Why split T1 and T2 40/60?

T2 (bike-to-run) usually takes a bit longer because you rack the bike, change shoes and often grab run nutrition, whereas T1 mostly involves shedding a wetsuit and mounting. The 40/60 default reflects that; adjust it to your own routine.

What if my budget comes out negative?

It means your swim, bike and run splits already add up to more than your target finish, so the goal is not achievable without faster splits. Trim time from a discipline or set a more realistic target.
