How it works

Film area = body area × (1 + waste%) · Linear feet = film area ÷ roll width

Wrap film is sold by the linear foot off a fixed-width roll, so the length you order is the total film area divided by the roll width. The body area alone is never enough: overlaps at edges, wrapping into door jambs, and the panels you inevitably recut push real consumption 10–20% above the bare surface. Complex curves and large single panels (roofs, hoods) waste the most, so lean toward the higher end for a first-time wrap.

Worked example

A midsize car is about 250 sq ft. With a 15% waste allowance that is 250 × 1.15 = 287.5 sq ft of film. Off a 5 ft wide roll that is 287.5 ÷ 5 ≈ 57.5 linear feet to order.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is vehicle wrap vinyl?

Cast wrap film is almost always 60 inches (5 feet) wide. The default here assumes that; change it if your material is a different width.

Why not just order the exact body area?

You would run short. Every panel needs film wrapped around its edges and into jambs, and you will recut sections that lift or wrinkle. The waste allowance covers that reality — skimp on it and you order a second roll.

Does a matte or textured film change the amount?

The area is the same, but textured and matte films are less forgiving of repositioning, so add a few points to the waste allowance if you are new to them.
