Wallpaper Paste Amount Calculator
Work out how much wallpaper paste you need from the wall area and the spread rate, then how many packets to buy and what they cost.
How it works
Paste (L) = wall area ÷ spread rate · Packets = ceil(paste ÷ paste per packet) · Cost = packets × price
Wallpaper paste is sold as a powder you mix with water, and each packet makes a set volume of ready paste. The paste you need is simply the wall area divided by how far a litre spreads — a rate that depends on the paper: heavy vinyls and lining papers drink paste at around 5 m² per litre, while thin printed papers can reach 7. Always round the packet count up, because running out mid-wall means mixing a fresh batch that may not match.
Worked example
For 30 m² of wall at a 5 m²/L spread rate you need 30 ÷ 5 = 6 L of paste. If one packet makes 4.5 L, that is 6 ÷ 4.5 = 1.33, rounded up to 2 packets — which actually make 9 L, leaving a comfortable margin for offcuts and touch-ups.
Frequently asked questions
How much wall does one packet of paste cover?
It depends on the paste yield and the paper. A packet that makes 4.5 L of paste, spread at 5 m² per litre, covers about 22 m² — roughly four standard rolls. Heavier papers reduce that; lighter papers stretch it.
Should I buy extra paste?
Yes — always round up to the next whole packet. Powder paste keeps well sealed and dry, and having a little spare avoids stopping mid-job to mix a new batch that may set at a slightly different consistency.
Does paste-the-wall paper change the amount?
Paste-the-wall installs use a similar total volume because you are still coating the same area, but application is faster and cleaner. Use the same spread rate the manufacturer prints on the paste packet.
