How it works

goal date: weeks = ⌈(goal − already saved) ÷ weekly amount⌉, goal date = start + weeks × 7 days · weekly amount = (goal − already saved) ÷ weeks · with interest: each week balance = balance × (1 + APY)^(1/52) + deposit · with a step-up: deposit in week k = first deposit + increase × (k − 1)

A flat weekly deposit reaches a target in a predictable number of weeks: the amount still needed divided by the weekly deposit, rounded up because the final week tops you over the line. The calculator counts from your start date in seven-day steps, so the goal date is the first week your balance meets or beats the target. Switch to “Weekly amount” to work backward: enter how many weeks you have and it returns the deposit you need each week, plus the monthly and daily equivalents. Under More options you can add an interest rate (the APY is turned into a weekly rate and compounded every week), a weekly step-up for challenges such as the 52-week savings challenge, and choose whether the first deposit is made on the start date or a week later. The week-by-week schedule shows every deposit date and balance, and the chart compares your balance with the goal.

Worked example

A $5,000 goal with $500 saved needs $4,500 more. At $150 a week that is ⌈4,500 ÷ 150⌉ = 30 weeks — starting September 16, 2026, the 30th deposit lands on April 14, 2027. To get there in 26 weeks instead, switch to “Weekly amount”: $4,500 ÷ 26 = $173.08 a week (about $750 a month). The 52-week challenge — $1 in week 1, rising by $1 a week — puts away 1 + 2 + … + 52 = $1,378 in a year.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include interest?

Only if you enter a rate under More options. The APY is converted to a weekly rate, (1 + APY)^(1/52) − 1, and added to the balance every week before that week’s deposit. For a short cash goal the effect is small, so leaving it at 0 keeps the date slightly conservative.

Why does the final balance sometimes exceed the goal?

Because weeks are whole. The last deposit usually pushes you a little past the target rather than landing exactly on it, so the balance at the goal date can be slightly above the goal.

How do I find the weekly amount for a deadline?

Switch “What do you want to find?” to Weekly amount and enter the number of weeks until your deadline. Without interest it is simply the amount still needed divided by the weeks, rounded up to the cent; with interest or a step-up the calculator solves it for you.

How does the 52-week savings challenge work here?

Set the goal to $1,378, already saved to $0, the weekly amount to $1 and “Increase the deposit each week by” to $1. You deposit $1 in week 1, $2 in week 2 and so on up to $52 in week 52, which adds up to $1,378.

When is the first deposit made?

By default one week after the start date, so the goal date is start + weeks × 7 days. Turn on “First deposit on the start date” if you put money in on day one; every deposit and the goal date then move one week earlier.
