Words to Reading Time Calculator
Estimate reading time from a word count at your chosen words-per-minute — for articles, scripts, speeches and content planning.
How it works
minutes = word count ÷ words-per-minute
Reading time is simply the word count divided by a reading speed. Silent adult reading of general prose averages around 238 words per minute, technical or careful reading is slower (near 180), and reading aloud drops to roughly 130 because speech is paced for listeners. The "X min read" badges on blogs almost always round up and assume ~200–265 wpm; picking the speed that matches your audience and content type gives a far more honest estimate than a one-size-fits-all default.
Worked example
A 1,200-word article at 238 wpm: 1200 ÷ 238 = 5.04 minutes — about 5 min 2 sec, shown as a "5 min read." Read aloud at 130 wpm the same piece runs 1200 ÷ 130 = 9.2 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What reading speed should I assume?
A 2019 meta-analysis put average silent reading of English prose near 238 wpm. Use ~180 for technical or dense material, ~130 for content meant to be read aloud, and higher only for skimming.
Why do blog "min read" estimates vary?
Different platforms assume different speeds — commonly 200 to 265 wpm — and some add time for images or code blocks. That is why the same article can show 4 minutes on one site and 6 on another.
Does word count equal spoken length?
Speaking is slower and more variable than reading. For a script or speech, use the 130 wpm result as a starting point, then adjust for pauses, emphasis and audience.
