529 Monthly Contribution Calculator
Find the monthly 529 contribution needed to hit a college savings target by the time your child enrolls.
How it works
Monthly = (target − balance × (1+r)^n) ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1) ÷ r · n = years × 12 · r = annual return ÷ 12
This reverses the future-value formula: instead of asking what a deposit grows to, it asks what deposit reaches a set goal. Your existing balance is projected forward first, and only the remaining gap has to be filled by new monthly contributions. A higher assumed return lowers the required deposit but also raises the risk, so a 529 typically shifts toward safer holdings as enrollment approaches.
Worked example
To hit $100,000 in 15 years (180 months) at 6%, starting from a $5,000 balance: the $5,000 grows to about $12,300, leaving roughly $87,700 to fund with monthly deposits — about $300 a month.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I aim to save in a 529?
Many families target a portion of projected costs rather than 100%, planning to cover the rest with income, scholarships and financial aid. Use a college-cost projection to set the target, then let this tool size the monthly deposit.
Are 529 withdrawals tax-free?
Earnings grow tax-deferred and withdrawals are federal-tax-free when used for qualified education expenses such as tuition, fees, books and eligible room and board. Non-qualified withdrawals are taxed and usually carry a penalty on the earnings.
What return should I assume?
Age-based 529 portfolios start aggressive and glide to conservative as college nears, so a blended 5–7% is a common planning assumption. Lower it as the enrollment date approaches.
