ANY/A Calculator (Adjusted Net Yards per Pass Attempt)
Calculate a quarterback’s ANY/A (adjusted net yards per pass attempt) — plus Y/A, NY/A, AY/A and sack rate — from attempts, yards, touchdowns, interceptions and sacks.
How it works
ANY/A = (passing yards + 20 × TD − 45 × INT − sack yards) ÷ (attempts + sacks) · Y/A = yards ÷ attempts · NY/A = (yards − sack yards) ÷ (attempts + sacks) · AY/A = (yards + 20 × TD − 45 × INT) ÷ attempts.
Adjusted net yards per attempt, popularized by Pro Football Reference and the book “The Hidden Game of Football”, is one of the simplest quarterback stats that tracks well with winning. It starts from yards per attempt, adds a 20-yard bonus per touchdown, charges 45 yards per interception, and counts sacks as dropbacks with their lost yardage. An NFL-average season is roughly 6.0–6.5; 8.0 or more is MVP territory.
Worked example
A quarterback throws 550 passes for 4,200 yards, 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and is sacked 30 times for 200 yards. ANY/A = (4,200 + 20 × 30 − 45 × 10 − 200) ÷ (550 + 30) = 4,150 ÷ 580 = 7.16. His Y/A is 7.64, NY/A 6.90 and AY/A 7.91, with a 5.2% sack rate.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good ANY/A?
League average has been roughly 6.0–6.5 in recent NFL seasons. Around 7 is very good, and 8+ is elite — the best seasons in history are above 9.
Why 20 yards for a touchdown and 45 for an interception?
The weights come from studies of how many points touchdowns and turnovers are worth compared with yards. A touchdown is worth about 20 extra yards, and an interception costs about 45 yards of field position and lost scoring chance.
Why does ANY/A include sacks?
A sack is a failed passing play, often partly caused by the quarterback holding the ball. Counting sacks as attempts and subtracting their yards makes the stat fairer between quarterbacks who throw it away and those who take sacks.
Is ANY/A better than passer rating?
Many analysts think so: it is in yards, easy to interpret, includes sacks and correlates more closely with team scoring and wins than the traditional passer rating.
