NCAA Passer Efficiency Rating Calculator (College Football)
Calculate the NCAA passing efficiency rating used in college and high school football from attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions, with the NFL passer rating for the same line.
How it works
NCAA rating = (8.4 × yards + 330 × TD + 100 × completions − 200 × INT) ÷ attempts.
The NCAA passing efficiency formula, adopted in 1979 and used by college and most US high school football, has no upper cap — unlike the NFL passer rating, which tops out at 158.3. It weights yards, touchdowns and completions per attempt and subtracts interceptions; an average FBS passer sits around 130–140, and record seasons top 200. The NFL rating for the same stat line is shown for comparison.
Worked example
A quarterback goes 20 of 30 for 250 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Rating = (8.4 × 250 + 330 × 2 + 100 × 20 − 200 × 1) ÷ 30 = (2,100 + 660 + 2,000 − 200) ÷ 30 = 4,560 ÷ 30 = 152.0. The same line gives an NFL passer rating of 100.7.

Frequently asked questions
How is the NCAA passer rating calculated?
Multiply yards by 8.4, touchdowns by 330 and completions by 100, subtract 200 per interception, then divide by attempts. 20 of 30 for 250 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT gives 152.0.
What is the highest possible NCAA passer rating?
There is no cap. A single 99-yard touchdown on one attempt rates 1,261.6, and the lowest possible is −731.6. For a full season, ratings above 200 are historically rare.
Why is the NCAA rating different from the NFL rating?
The NFL formula caps each of its four parts and scales to 0–158.3, while the NCAA formula is a simple weighted sum per attempt. College numbers therefore look much higher — a 152 college rating is roughly a 100 NFL rating.
What is a good passer efficiency rating in college?
For an FBS season, about 150–170 is very good and 170+ is elite; national leaders usually finish between 180 and 210.
