How it works

Brew ratio = water (g) ÷ dose (g)

The AeroPress is flexible: the same device makes a concentrated shot you dilute afterward or a full, filter-style cup, depending on the ratio. Ratios below about 1:8 give a concentrate meant to be topped up with hot water; 1:13 to 1:17 brews a balanced cup directly. Because steep times are short and pressure is gentle, a medium-fine grind and water around 80–90 °C keep the cup clean and sweet.

Worked example

A 15 g dose with 220 ml of water is a 220 ÷ 15 ≈ 1:14.7 ratio — a balanced full cup you can drink as-is.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the standard or inverted method?

Both work with any of these ratios. The inverted method delays draining so you control steep time precisely, while the standard method is simpler and faster. The ratio matters more for strength than the orientation.

What grind size is best for AeroPress?

Medium-fine — finer than drip, coarser than espresso — suits most AeroPress recipes. If the plunger is very hard to press, grind a little coarser; if it drops with no resistance, grind finer.

How do I make an AeroPress concentrate?

Use a low ratio near 1:5 to 1:7, brew as normal, then dilute the shot with hot water or milk to taste. This is handy for making several cups or an Americano-style drink.
