Age Difference Calculator
Find the exact age gap between two people from birth dates, birth years or ages — in years, months and days, decimal years, months, weeks and days — plus who is older, both ages on any date, the age ratio, when one was twice the other’s age and a milestones table.
How it works
gap = whole years, then whole months, then leftover days between the earlier and later birth date · decimal gap = whole years + days past the last anniversary ÷ days in that year · age ratio = older’s days alive ÷ younger’s days alive · twice as old on = younger’s birth date + gap in days · birth years: gap = |year 1 − year 2| (true gap within ±1 year) · ages: gap = |age 1 − age 2|
The earlier birth date belongs to the older person, and the gap is measured by walking the calendar from that date to the younger one — whole years, then whole months, then leftover days. Because it counts real calendar units rather than dividing by 365.25, the years figure only ticks up on the shared “anniversary” of the gap, which is how people naturally describe an age difference. The same gap is shown as decimal years, months and days, weeks and days, total days and hours. If you only know birth years or current ages, switch the mode: birth years give the gap to within a year either way, ages give it directly. With birth dates you also see both people’s ages on today’s date (or any date under More options), the age ratio, the date the older person was exactly twice the younger’s age, which part of the year their whole-year ages differ by one more, and a table of how the gap looks at the younger person’s milestone birthdays. An optional “half your age plus seven” line covers the popular dating rule of thumb.
Worked example
Person 1 born 20 May 1990 and Person 2 born 2 Nov 1993: Person 1 is older. Walking from 20 May 1990, 3 years and 5 months reach 20 Oct 1993, with 13 days left to 2 Nov — a gap of 3 years, 5 months, 13 days, or 1,262 days (about 3.45 years). Person 1 was twice Person 2’s age on April 17, 1997, when Person 2 was 3 years, 5 months and 13 days old. Each year their ages differ by 4 from May 20 to November 1 and by 3 the rest of the year. By the time Person 2 turns 30, the age ratio has shrunk to about 1.12.
Frequently asked questions
Does the order of the two dates matter?
No — the calculator always measures from the earlier date to the later one, so the gap is positive either way, and it tells you which person is older.
Why is the gap not just the difference in birth years?
Two people born in 1990 and 1993 can be anywhere from just over 2 years to nearly 4 years apart depending on the months. The calendar walk gives the exact figure; the Birth years mode shows that range when the dates are unknown.
Why do our ages differ by different amounts during the year?
Unless the gap is a whole number of years, there is a stretch each year — from the older person’s birthday until the day before the younger person’s — when the whole-year ages differ by one more. The “Difference in whole years” line gives those dates.
When was one person twice the other’s age?
Exactly when the younger person’s age equalled the gap. For a gap of 3 years, 5 months and 13 days, that is the day the younger person was that old. After that the ratio keeps falling towards 1 but never reaches it.
Can I use this for relationship age gaps?
Yes — it is the same calculation. Enter both birth dates and read the gap, and turn on the “half your age plus seven” line under More options if you want that rule of thumb. It is a social guideline, not a scientific or legal one.
