How it works

Weekly = beer×150 + wine×125 + spirits×100 + cocktails×250 · Yearly ÷ 3,500 = lb equivalent

Alcohol carries 7 calories per gram — nearly as much as fat — and drink calories are almost never accounted for at meals. This tracker totals a typical week across the four common drink types, then projects the annual figure and its rough weight equivalent using the 3,500-calorie-per-pound rule of thumb. Cocktails and sweet mixers are the heaviest offenders; the same spirit poured neat costs less than half.

Worked example

4 beers (600), 3 wines (375), 2 shots (200) and 1 cocktail (250) total 1,425 kcal a week. Over 52 weeks that is 74,100 kcal — about 21 lb of fat-equivalent calories if none are offset by activity or eating less.

Frequently asked questions

Does alcohol really cause weight gain?

The calories count like any other, and because alcohol is metabolized first, the body burns less of the fat and carbs eaten alongside it. Regular drinking also loosens food restraint, so the meal calories often rise too.

Why are cocktails so much higher?

The spirit itself is only about 100 calories, but juices, syrups, tonic and liqueurs frequently add 150 or more. Choosing soda water, diet mixers or drinking spirits neat cuts the total sharply.

Is the pound-per-year figure exact?

No — it uses the classic 3,500-calorie-per-pound estimate and assumes none of the calories are offset. Real weight change depends on your overall energy balance, but the figure shows the scale of the hidden intake.
