How it works

Amazon fees = price×referral% + FBA fee + storage · Profit = price − Amazon fees − product cost − inbound shipping · ROI = profit ÷ (product cost + inbound)

Fulfilled by Amazon layers three charges on each sale: a referral fee that is a percentage of the price (typically 15%, category-dependent), a flat per-unit fulfillment fee that scales with size and weight, and a monthly storage charge per unit. Subtracting those gives your Amazon payout; real profit also removes your product cost and the inbound shipping to send stock to Amazon. The ROI figure — profit against your cash outlay per unit — is what tells you whether a product is worth restocking. All fee inputs are editable to match your category and product size tier.

Worked example

A $30 product costing $8 with $1.50 inbound shipping: referral 15% = $4.50, FBA fee $5.00, storage $0.30 — $9.80 in Amazon fees, leaving a $20.20 payout. After $9.50 of product and inbound cost you profit $10.70 per unit, a 35.7% margin and a 112.6% ROI on the $9.50 you had tied up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the referral fee and the FBA fee?

The referral fee is Amazon’s commission — a percentage of the sale price (usually 15%) that applies whether you fulfill orders yourself or through FBA. The FBA fulfillment fee is a separate flat per-unit charge for Amazon picking, packing and shipping the item, and it scales with the product’s size and weight.

Why does ROI matter more than margin for FBA?

Margin measures profit against the sale price, but ROI measures it against the cash you actually put in per unit (product plus inbound). With limited working capital, a product with a lower margin but far higher ROI lets you turn your money over faster and grow quicker.

How do I estimate the storage fee per unit?

Amazon bills monthly storage by cubic foot, and it rises sharply in the Oct–Dec peak. Divide your expected monthly storage bill for a product by the units you expect to sell that month, and enter that per-unit figure. Slow-moving stock also risks long-term storage surcharges.
