How it works

Referral fee = max(price×referral%, referral minimum) · Fees = referral + FBA + closing · Profit = price − fees − item cost

Amazon’s core selling cost is the referral fee — a percentage of the item price (not the shipping) that varies by category, most commonly 15%, with a small per-item minimum of about $0.30. If you use Fulfilment by Amazon, add the per-unit FBA fulfillment fee that covers pick, pack and ship; media categories such as books and DVDs also carry a fixed closing fee. This tool takes the greater of the percentage referral fee and its minimum, adds any FBA and closing fees, subtracts your item cost, and shows profit and margin. Referral rates differ widely by category, so the percentage is editable.

Worked example

Selling a $20 item that cost $5: the referral fee is 15% = $3.00 (well above the $0.30 minimum), with no FBA and no closing fee. Total fees $3.00, leaving $17.00 and, after the $5 cost, $12.00 profit — a 60.0% margin. Add a $3.50 FBA fee and profit falls to $8.50.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon charge the referral fee on shipping?

The referral fee is charged on the item price (and any gift wrap), not on the shipping you set for seller-fulfilled orders. This calculator applies the referral percentage to the price only, which matches Amazon’s referral-fee basis — so there is no separate shipping field here.

What is the minimum referral fee?

Most categories have a per-item minimum referral fee (commonly $0.30) that applies when the percentage would be smaller — for example on very low-priced items. The calculator charges whichever is larger, the percentage or the minimum, and notes in the breakdown when the minimum applied.

Do I need to include the FBA fee?

Only if you use Fulfilment by Amazon. The FBA fee is a per-unit charge for picking, packing and shipping that depends on the item’s size and weight. Leave it at 0 for merchant-fulfilled (FBM) orders, or enter your per-unit fee if Amazon ships for you.
