AP/CLEP Tuition Savings Calculator
Turn AP and CLEP exam credits into dollars saved — the college tuition those credits replace, minus the exam fees you paid.
How it works
Tuition value = credits × cost per credit · Net savings = tuition value − exam fees · Semesters saved = credits ÷ 15
AP and CLEP exams let you earn college credit for a fraction of the tuition those courses would cost. Each accepted credit replaces a credit you would otherwise pay for, so the savings scale with your school’s per-credit price — and because exams cost a fixed fee well below tuition, the return is usually large. Beyond dollars, credits earned before enrollment can shorten your time to a degree, since about 15 credits equal one full-time semester.
Worked example
Fifteen credits at a $500-per-credit school are worth $7,500 of tuition. After $300 in exam fees, net savings are $7,200 — and 15 credits is about one full-time semester you never have to pay for.
Frequently asked questions
Will my college accept AP or CLEP credit?
Policies vary widely. Some schools grant full credit, others only place you in a higher course, and selective programs may accept little. Check each college’s credit policy and the score required before counting on the savings.
How many credits is a semester?
A full-time semester is typically about 15 credits, so 30 credits by exam is roughly a full year. This calculator uses 15 credits per semester to estimate time saved.
Do exam credits lower my GPA risk?
Credit from AP/CLEP usually posts as credit without a letter grade, so it does not affect your college GPA — you get the credit without the grade risk of taking the class.
