App Store & Google Play Fee Calculator
Developer proceeds from app sales and in-app purchases — 15% small-business rate or 30% standard, subscriptions after year one, store-collected taxes and monthly net revenue.
How it works
proceeds = price ÷ (1 + tax) × (1 − commission); monthly = proceeds × purchases × (1 − refund rate)
Both stores take 30% of digital sales by default, reduced to 15% for developers under $1 million a year (Apple’s Small Business Program; Google Play’s first $1M) and for subscriptions once a subscriber passes their first year. In countries where the price includes VAT or sales tax the store removes the tax before applying its commission, so the same $4.99 nets less in Europe than in the US. Alternative billing and EU rules are changing these numbers — check the current terms for your region.
Worked example
$4.99 at the 15% rate, no tax: $4.24 per sale; 1,500 sales with 2% refunds is $6,233 a month. At 30% the same sale pays $3.49.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 15% rate automatic?
Apple requires enrolment in the Small Business Program; Google applies 15% to the first $1M automatically (with enrolment for the service fee tier).
What about physical goods sold in an app?
Those use your own payment processor and pay no store commission — only digital goods and services do.
