Appetizers Per Guest Calculator
Estimate how many appetizer pieces to make for a party — whether they come before dinner or are the whole meal.
How it works
Pieces = guests × per-guest-per-hour × hours · per-guest-per-hour = 3 before a meal, 6 when apps are the meal · varieties = guests ÷ 10 (3–12)
When appetizers come before a full dinner, plan on about 3 bites per guest per hour — enough to take the edge off without spoiling the meal. When the appetizers are the meal, that jumps to roughly 6 pieces per guest per hour. Offering several different kinds keeps the table interesting; about one variety per ten guests is a good rule, with a minimum of three.
Worked example
For a 2-hour cocktail party of 20 guests where apps are the meal: 20 × 6 × 2 = 240 pieces. Across ceil(20 ÷ 10) = 3 varieties, that is 80 pieces of each.
Frequently asked questions
How many appetizers per person before dinner?
About 3 pieces per person per hour when a full meal follows. For a two-hour reception that is roughly 6 bites each — enough to mingle over without ruining anyone's appetite.
How many appetizers if there is no main meal?
Roughly double it — around 6 pieces per person per hour, or 10–14 bites each for a typical evening. Include some substantial, protein-based options so guests actually feel fed.
How many different appetizers should I serve?
Aim for about one kind per ten guests, with at least three for variety. More kinds in smaller amounts reads as more generous than a huge quantity of one thing.
