Average Order Value Calculator
Calculate average order value (AOV) from total revenue and number of orders — how much a typical customer spends per purchase.
How it works
AOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders
Average order value is the mean amount a customer spends in a single order — total revenue divided by the number of orders over the same period. It is one of the few growth levers that does not require more traffic: raising AOV lifts revenue from the customers you already have. Because your marketing pays a fixed cost to win each order, a higher AOV also improves the return on that spend and widens the gap between order value and acquisition cost. Common ways to raise it include upsells, cross-sells, product bundles, volume discounts and free-shipping thresholds set just above the current AOV.
Worked example
A store with $25,000 in revenue from 500 orders has an AOV of 25,000 ÷ 500 = $50. Nudging that to $55 with a bundle or a free-shipping threshold would add $2,500 of revenue across the same 500 orders — with no extra traffic.
Frequently asked questions
How can I increase average order value?
Offer relevant upsells and cross-sells at checkout, bundle complementary products, set a free-shipping threshold just above your current AOV, add volume or tiered discounts, and surface higher-tier options. Small nudges applied across every order add up quickly because they need no additional traffic.
Why does AOV matter for ad spend?
You pay roughly the same cost to acquire an order regardless of its size, so a higher AOV spreads that acquisition cost over more revenue. Raising AOV directly improves return on ad spend and makes paid acquisition profitable at CPAs that would otherwise be too high.
Should I use mean or median order value?
This calculator gives the mean (total revenue ÷ orders), the standard AOV figure. If a few very large orders skew your data, the median can better represent a typical order — but the mean is what most analytics and benchmarks report.
