Barrel Aging & Angel's Share Calculator (Evaporation Loss, ABV Drift & Bottles)

Estimate how much spirit a cask loses to evaporation over the years by barrel size and climate, how the ABV drifts up (dry, hot warehouses) or down (cool, damp ones), how many bottles remain at bottling strength, the equivalent aging time for small barrels with their high surface-to-volume ratio, and the value evaporated.

How it works

annual loss ≈ climate rate (2% cool/damp, 4% continental, 6% hot/dry, 9% tropical) × (200 ÷ litres)^⅓ · volume(t) = V₀ × (1 − rate)^t · ABV(t) ≈ fill ABV + drift × years (−0.4/yr damp, +0.6 to +1.0/yr dry) · bottles = remaining L × ABV ÷ bottling ABV ÷ 0.7

Oak breathes: spirit soaks into the staves and evaporates through them, and the barrel loses a few percent of its contents every year — the angels' share — at a rate governed mostly by the warehouse climate and by how much wood surface surrounds each litre, which is why a five-litre barrel loses proportionally several times what a two-hundred-litre cask does and matures its contents far faster in the woody dimensions of flavour. Whether alcohol or water leaves faster depends on the humidity of the air outside, so Scotch weakens in the cask while bourbon strengthens. The compounding loss is what makes very old spirit scarce and expensive, and the same maths says how many bottles a cask will finally yield.

Worked example

A 200 L ex-bourbon barrel filled at 63.5% and left 8 years in a Scottish warehouse loses about 2% a year — roughly 30 L — leaving ≈ 170 L at about 60.3%. That is 103 L of pure alcohol, or about 320 bottles at 46% instead of the 394 it started with: some 76 bottles, worth around $3,030 wholesale, have evaporated. The same spirit in a 5 L barrel would lose about 6.8% a year and taste as oaky in 8 months as the big cask does in about 2 years.

Frequently asked questions

Why is bourbon bottled at higher proof after aging than Scotch?

Kentucky rickhouses are hot and dry in summer, so water evaporates faster than alcohol and the cask strength climbs from 62.5% toward 65–70%. Scottish warehouses are cool and damp, so alcohol leaves faster and strength falls toward 50–55% over decades.

Are small barrels a shortcut to aged whiskey?

Only for the wood-derived part — colour, vanilla, tannin — which comes 3–4× faster. The mellowing from slow oxidation and ester formation still needs years, so small-barrel spirit is best aged a few months for oak, then rested in glass or a larger vessel.
