Effective Field Goal Percentage Calculator
Weight three-pointers correctly with effective field goal percentage (eFG%), and compare it to raw field goal and three-point percentage from the same shooting line.
How it works
eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA × 100 · Raw FG% = FGM ÷ FGA × 100
Raw field goal percentage treats a three-pointer and a layup as equal, even though a made three is worth 50% more points. Effective field goal percentage fixes that by adding half-credit for every made three, so a player who shoots a lower percentage but from behind the arc is no longer penalised. It answers the real question — how many points did these shots produce — better than plain FG%.
Worked example
A player hits 9 of 18 field goals, 3 of them threes. eFG% = (9 + 0.5 × 3) ÷ 18 = 10.5 ÷ 18 = 58.3%, well above the raw 50.0% field goal percentage, because those three-pointers are worth extra points.

Frequently asked questions
How is eFG% different from true shooting percentage?
Effective field goal percentage accounts for the extra value of threes but ignores free throws. True shooting percentage goes one step further and folds in free throws, giving a single number for all scoring efficiency.
Can effective field goal percentage exceed 100%?
Yes, in theory — a player who makes every shot and takes many threes can exceed 100%, because the bonus for threes is added on top. In practice, season-long team eFG% sits around 52–56%.
Do three-pointers count in both FGM and 3PM?
Yes. A made three counts once in total field goals made and again in three-pointers made; the formula uses 3PM only to add the half-point bonus, so do not remove threes from your FGM total.
