Beer Calories Calculator
Calories in a beer from its ABV and serving size (with an optional residual-sugar tweak) — per serving, per 100 mL, carbs, and how many beers equal a burger or a run.
How it works
kcal per 100 mL ≈ ABV × 0.789 × 7 (alcohol) + residual carbs (g) × 4; serving = per-100 mL × mL ÷ 100
Most of a beer’s calories come from alcohol itself — 7 kcal per gram, almost as dense as fat — which is why a strong IPA can carry 300 kcal a pint while a 4% lager sits under 200. The rest is residual sugar and dextrins that the yeast left behind: dry lagers and light beers have very little, stouts and sweet styles more. Labels rarely list calories, so ABV and style are the practical way to estimate.
Worked example
A 500 mL lager at 5%: 5 × 0.789 × 7 = 27.6 kcal per 100 mL from alcohol plus 12 from carbs → about 200 kcal a glass, 600 for three.
Frequently asked questions
Is “light” beer lower in calories because of less alcohol?
Mostly yes — light beers cut both ABV and residual carbs, typically landing at 90–110 kcal per 355 mL.
Does 0% beer have calories?
Yes, from carbs — usually 20–30 kcal per 100 mL, similar to a soft drink.
