Bird Age in Human Years Calculator
Convert a pet bird’s age to human years for budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, conures, African greys, macaws and more.
How it works
Human years = bird age ÷ typical species lifespan × 80
Bird lifespans range from a budgie’s 8 years to a macaw’s 60+, so there is no single conversion — the fair comparison is the fraction of a typical lifespan lived. Large parrots mature slowly (an African grey is a “teenager” at 5) and can outlive their owners, which is why rescues ask about succession plans.
Worked example
A 6-year-old cockatiel: 6 ÷ 18 × 80 ≈ 27 human years.
Frequently asked questions
Do wild birds live as long?
Usually much less — predators, weather and food scarcity halve most lifespans outside captivity.
How do I know my bird’s age?
Leg-band codes, breeder records, or vet estimates from eye colour and beak wear in young birds.
