How it works

Spine width (inches) = page count ÷ pages-per-inch (ppi) · mm = inches × 25.4

A spine is only as wide as the stacked paper inside it, so its width equals the page count divided by the paper stock’s pages-per-inch (ppi) rating. Thicker or higher-weight paper has a lower ppi and produces a wider spine for the same page count. Cover printers require this number to place the spine text and the front/back fold lines correctly, and most set a minimum page count (often around 80-100) before a spine is wide enough to print text on.

Worked example

A 200-page book on white 50 lb stock (444 ppi) has a spine of 200 ÷ 444 = 0.450 in, or about 11.4 mm. The same 200 pages on premium color stock (178 ppi) would be 1.124 in — more than twice as thick.

Frequently asked questions

What is pages-per-inch (ppi)?

It is how many pages of a given paper stack up to one inch of thickness. Lighter, thinner paper has a higher ppi (more pages per inch); heavy color stock has a lower ppi and thicker spines.

Does the cover thickness count?

For a paperback, no — the spine width is just the text block. Hardcover cases add board and wrap thickness on top, which the case supplier accounts for separately.

Why does my printer reject a thin spine?

Below roughly 80-100 pages the spine is too narrow to reliably print text, so most print-on-demand services require a blank spine until you cross their minimum page count.
