Booklet Signature Calculator
Find how many signatures a booklet needs, plus the blank pages you must pad to fill the last one — essential for perfect-bound and section-sewn jobs.
How it works
Signatures = ⌈total pages ÷ pages-per-signature⌉ · Blanks = signatures × pages-per-signature − total pages
A signature is a single large sheet printed with several pages, then folded down into a section of the book — commonly 16 or 32 pages. Bookbinders gather signatures in sequence, so the total page count must be a whole number of signatures; any shortfall is filled with blank pages at the end. Choosing a page count that is an exact multiple of the signature size eliminates those blanks and can lower cost.
Worked example
A 48-page booklet in 16-page signatures needs 48 ÷ 16 = 3 signatures exactly, with no blanks. A 50-page booklet would need 4 signatures (64 pages) and 14 blank pages — a strong reason to trim to 48 or expand to 64.
Frequently asked questions
What is a signature in bookbinding?
It is one printed sheet folded into a section of pages — typically 16 or 32. The book is assembled by stacking or sewing these sections in order.
Why do I get blank pages?
Because the book must contain a whole number of signatures. If your content does not fill the last one exactly, the remainder is padded with blanks.
How do I avoid blank pages?
Design to a page count that is an exact multiple of your signature size (e.g. 16, 32, 48, 64). This wastes no paper and often prints cheaper.
