How it works
Net burn = expenses − revenue; runway (months) = cash ÷ net burn
Net burn is how much cash you lose each month after revenue. Runway is how long your bank balance lasts at that rate — the single most important number for an unprofitable startup planning its next raise.
Worked example
$300k cash with $45k expenses and $15k revenue burns $30k/month — about 10 months of runway.
Frequently asked questions
When should I raise more?
A common rule is to start raising with 6–12 months of runway left, since fundraising itself takes months.
Gross vs net burn?
Gross burn is total spend; net burn subtracts revenue. Runway uses net burn.
