How it works

grams = amount × grams-per-unit · result = grams ÷ grams-per-target-unit · (1 stick = ½ cup = 8 tbsp = 113 g = 4 oz)

Every butter measure is anchored to the US stick: ½ cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces and 113 grams are all the same 113 g brick. Converting is just going through grams — the amount becomes grams using its own factor, then grams becomes the target unit. This is exact for US sticks; European butter is sold in 250 g blocks with no stick markings, so weigh those.

Worked example

1 stick × 113 g = 113 g, and 113 g ÷ 1 g/gram = 113 grams. Two sticks would be 1 cup, 16 tablespoons or 226 g — the same block counted different ways.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?

Eight. A US stick is ½ cup, and since a cup is 16 tablespoons, half a cup is 8. Most stick wrappers are printed with tablespoon and cup marks so you can cut straight to the amount.

My European butter has no stick markings — what do I do?

Weigh it. European and UK butter comes in 250 g (or 500 g) blocks, so a US "stick" is about 113 g, or a little under half a 250 g block. A kitchen scale removes all guesswork.

Is a cup of butter measured by volume or weight?

By the packed volume the stick fills — 1 cup of butter is 2 sticks, which weighs 226 g. Because butter is dense and consistent, its cup-to-gram conversion is far more reliable than flour or sugar.
