How it works

RDA from age/sex bands (IOM): 1000 mg adults 19–50 · 1200 mg women 51+ and everyone 71+ · ~300 mg per cup of milk

Calcium needs peak during the bone-building teenage years (1300 mg) and rise again after 50 for women and 70 for everyone as bone loss accelerates. The tolerable upper limit matters too: consistently exceeding it, mostly through supplements, is linked to kidney stones and possibly cardiovascular risk. Vitamin D governs how well calcium is absorbed, so the two are usually considered together.

Worked example

A 35-year-old woman has an RDA of 1000 mg/day — about 1000 ÷ 300 ≈ 3.3 cups of milk-equivalent — with a safe ceiling of 2500 mg/day from all sources.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get enough calcium without dairy?

Yes. Fortified plant milks, tofu set with calcium, leafy greens like kale and bok choy, canned fish with bones, and almonds are all good sources.

Should I split calcium supplements?

The body absorbs calcium best in doses of 500 mg or less, so if you supplement more than that, splitting it into two doses improves uptake.

Does more calcium mean stronger bones?

Only up to the recommended level. Beyond the RDA there is little extra benefit, and exceeding the upper limit can cause harm — pairing adequate calcium with vitamin D and weight-bearing exercise matters more.
