Carbohydrate Intake Calculator
Convert daily calories and a carb percentage into grams of carbohydrate per day.
How it works
carb grams = calories × carb% ÷ 100 ÷ 4
Carbohydrate provides about 4 calories per gram. The Dietary Guidelines set an acceptable range of 45–65% of calories from carbs for adults. Endurance athletes trend to the top of that band to keep muscle glycogen topped up; lower-carb eaters sit near the bottom.
Worked example
On 2,000 kcal at 50% carbs: 2,000 × 0.50 = 1,000 kcal ÷ 4 = 250 g of carbohydrate per day.
Frequently asked questions
How many carbs should I eat a day?
The recommended range is 45–65% of calories — roughly 225–325 g on a 2,000-calorie diet. Favor whole grains, fruit, vegetables and legumes over refined sugars and starches.
Are carbs bad for weight loss?
Weight change is driven by total calories, not carbs specifically. Lower-carb diets can help appetite control for some people, but at matched calories and protein, fat loss is similar across carb levels.
What is the minimum carbohydrate I need?
The RDA is 130 g/day to supply the brain with glucose, though the body can adapt to less by making ketones. Very low intakes are a personal choice, not a requirement for everyone.
