Carpet Shampoo Solution Calculator
Mix the right carpet-cleaner concentrate and water for your machine tank, and see how many refills a room of a given size needs.
How it works
Concentrate per tank = rate × tank gallons · Tanks = ⌈area ÷ coverage⌉ · Total concentrate = per-tank × tanks
Carpet machines dose concentrate against the clean-water tank, so the per-tank amount is simply the label rate times the tank size in gallons. A room usually needs more than one tank, so dividing the area by the coverage per tank (and rounding up) tells you how many refills — and therefore how much concentrate — to prepare. Fill only to the machine’s solution line and use warm, not hot, water unless the label says otherwise.
Worked example
A 1-gallon tank at 2 oz of concentrate per gallon takes 2 oz per fill. Cleaning 200 sq ft at 200 sq ft per tank is 1 tank, so you use about 2 oz of concentrate in total.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use more concentrate for stubborn stains?
Spot-treat heavy stains directly rather than over-concentrating the whole tank. Too much solution leaves residue that attracts dirt, so the carpet re-soils faster after it dries.
Why rinse with plain water afterward?
A plain-water pass pulls leftover detergent out of the fibers. Residual soap is sticky and holds dust, which is why some carpets look dirty again within days of a cleaning.
Hot or warm water?
Warm water dissolves concentrate and lifts soil well without risking damage. Very hot water can set some stains and may harm certain carpet fibers or backings, so follow the machine and solution instructions.
