How it works

square feet = length × width · square yards = square feet ÷ 9 · cost = square feet × price

Square footage is simply length times width when both are in feet. Nine square feet make a square yard, so dividing by 9 converts the area — handy for flooring and materials sold by the yard. For an L-shaped or irregular space, split it into rectangles, find each area, and add them up.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 square feet, or 13.33 square yards. Flooring quoted at $5 per square foot would run 120 × 5 = $600 before waste and underlayment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an irregular room?

Break it into rectangles and triangles, calculate each piece separately, and total them. For a triangle, area is ½ × base × height. Rounding each measurement up slightly builds in a small safety margin.

Should I add waste to a material order?

Yes — add 5–10% for straight layouts and up to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and busy rooms with many cuts. Buy it all in one lot so colors and dye batches match.

What is the difference between square feet and linear feet?

Square feet measure area (length × width); linear feet measure a single dimension along a run, like trim or countertop edge. They are not interchangeable — check which one a material is priced by.
