How it works

Cashback = spend × rate% × 12 · Net = grocery cashback + other cashback − annual fee · Effective rate = net ÷ annual spend

A rewards card is only worth its fee if your cashback clears it, so the honest figure is net of the annual fee, not the flashy headline rate. Splitting grocery spend at its bonus rate from everything else at the base rate mirrors how these cards actually pay. The effective rate — net cashback over total spend — is the single number that lets you compare a fee card against a flat no-fee card on equal terms.

Worked example

$600 of groceries at 6% earns $36 a month; $800 of other spend at 1% earns $8. That is $44 a month, $528 a year gross, minus a $95 fee = $433 net — an effective 2.6% on $16,800 of annual spending.

Frequently asked questions

When is an annual-fee card worth it?

When its net value beats the best no-fee alternative for your spending. If your grocery spend is high enough that the bonus rate clears the fee with room to spare, the fee card wins — this calculator shows by how much.

Do bonus categories have caps?

Many grocery cards cap the bonus rate at a yearly spend limit, after which you earn the base rate. If you'll exceed the cap, split your spend into capped and uncapped portions for a precise figure.

Does cashback count as taxable income?

In most places, cashback earned on your own purchases is treated as a rebate, not income. Sign-up bonuses with no spending requirement can differ — check local rules if that applies.
