Casserole Servings Calculator
How many casserole or baking dishes you need for a crowd: total volume, servings per dish, how to cut each pan and how many oven rounds it takes. Covers 8×8, 9×13, deep lasagna pans, 1–4 quart casseroles, hotel pans or your own dish size, with children, appetite and other mains on the table.
How it works
portions = guests + ½ × children · serving per guest = serving size × appetite (0.8 / 1 / 1.25) × share ((1 + ½ × other mains) ÷ (1 + other mains)) · servings to make = ⌈portions × (1 + extra %)⌉ · servings per dish = ⌊dish cups ÷ serving⌋ · dishes = ⌈servings to make ÷ servings per dish⌉ · custom dish: cups = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 14.44, or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth ÷ 14.44
A main-dish serving of casserole is about 1¼ cups (300 mL) and a side about ¾ cup (180 mL). A 9×13 in dish holds roughly 15 cups, so it serves about 12 as a main or 20 as a side. The calculator works out how many servings each dish really holds, rounding down so no serving is split between two pans, then how many dishes your crowd needs, rounding up. Children count as half a serving, light or hearty eaters shift the portion by 20–25%, and with other mains on the table each dish needs less. It also tells you how much mixture to put in each dish, how to cut a rectangular pan into even pieces and how many oven rounds the bake takes. For a dish not on the list, enter its inside size and how deep the filling will be.
Worked example
15 guests, main dish, 9×13 in dish: 15 × 1¼ = 18.75 cups (4.4 L). A 9×13 holds about 15 cups, which is 15 ÷ 1.25 = 12 servings, so you need ⌈15 ÷ 12⌉ = 2 dishes with about 9.4 cups in each. That makes 24 servings, 9 spare. Cut each pan 3 × 4 into 12 pieces about 3 × 3¼ in. With one other main on the buffet each guest takes about 1.25 × 0.75 = 0.94 cup, so 16 servings fit in one dish and a single 9×13 covers everyone.

Frequently asked questions
How many does a 9×13 casserole serve?
About 12 as a main dish (1¼ cups each, cut 3 × 4) and up to 20 as a side (¾ cup). A deep 3-inch lasagna pan holds about 20 cups, so it serves around 16 as a main.
How much casserole per person?
Plan 1 to 1½ cups (240–350 mL) per adult when the casserole is the main dish and ½ to ¾ cup as a side. Count young children as half a serving, and scale down when several mains are served at a potluck.
How many cups does a casserole dish hold?
A 1-quart casserole holds 4 cups, 2 quarts 8 cups and 3 quarts 12 cups. An 8×8 in pan holds about 8 cups, a 9×9 or 7×11 about 11, and a 9×13 about 15. A half hotel pan 2½ in deep holds about 16 cups and a full one about 32.
Can I bake several casseroles at once?
Usually two 9×13 dishes fit on one rack. A full oven bakes slower and browns unevenly, so add 10–15 minutes, swap the racks halfway, or bake in rounds and keep the first dishes covered in a low oven.
Should I make one big pan or several smaller ones?
Smaller dishes bake and reheat faster and travel better, and you can bring them out as needed. One large pan is less work and stays hot longer on a buffet. The table below the results shows how many of each size your crowd needs.
