How it works

Year 1 → 15 · Year 2 → +9 (total 24) · each year after → +4

Cats mature fastest in their first two years, so the mapping to human years is front-loaded rather than a flat multiplier. The widely used veterinary rule counts the first year as 15 human years and the second as another 9 — reaching 24 by age two — then adds about 4 human years for every cat year after that. It is why a two-year-old cat is already a young adult, not a toddler.

Worked example

A 3-year-old cat: 15 (year one) + 9 (year two) + 4 (year three) = 28 human years — a healthy adult. A 15-year-old cat works out to 24 + 13×4 = 76 human years, firmly geriatric.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the first year worth 15 human years?

A one-year-old cat is physically and sexually mature, comparable to a human teenager. Growth and development happen far faster early in life, so those first cat years map to many human years.

Is this the same as dog years?

No. Dogs age at rates that vary a lot by breed and size, while the cat rule is fairly uniform. Use a dog age calculator for dogs rather than the old "multiply by 7" shortcut, which is inaccurate for both.

Do indoor and outdoor cats age differently?

The biological clock is similar, but indoor cats often live longer because they avoid traffic, predators and disease. This calculator estimates age-equivalence, not life expectancy.
