Age in Dog Years Calculator
How old would you be as a dog? Convert your human age into dog years two ways — the pop-culture ×7 joke and the life-stage-matched vet curve.
How it works
life-stage dog age inverts the vet curve: dog ≈ human ÷ 15 (up to 15 human yrs), then 1 + (human − 15) ÷ 9 (to 24), then 2 + (human − 24) ÷ size increment · pop-culture = human age × 7
This flips the usual dog-age question around: instead of turning a dog’s age into human years, it asks how old you would be as a dog. The headline number matches life stages by inverting the size-adjusted vet curve, so “you’d be a young adult dog” actually lines up with your human life stage. The ×7 figure is the familiar pop-culture joke, shown for comparison — it wildly overstates things and is not how dogs age.
Worked example
At 30 human years, matched against a medium dog, the curve gives 2 + (30 − 24) ÷ 5 = about 3.2 dog years — a dog in its prime. The ×7 joke would instead call you 210, which is why vets abandoned that rule long ago.
Frequently asked questions
Which number should I believe?
The life-stage figure is the meaningful one — it matches human and dog life stages using the curve vets favour. The ×7 number is only there as the well-known joke.
Why does dog size matter?
Bigger dogs age faster once grown, so the same human age maps to a slightly different dog age depending on the breed size you compare against.
Is this scientific?
It is a fun inversion of a respected rule of thumb, not a lab result. Enjoy it as a novelty rather than a health metric.
