How it works

Daily water ≈ trunk diameter (in) × warmth factor (quarts) · Days per refill = stand capacity ÷ daily use · Recommended reservoir ≈ 1 qt per inch of trunk

A fresh-cut tree keeps drinking as long as its cut stays submerged, and a well-known rule of thumb is about a quart of water per inch of trunk diameter per day — more in a warm, dry room. The reservoir should never run dry, because an exposed cut seals over with sap within hours and the tree stops taking up water. Check the level daily, especially in the first week when uptake is highest.

Worked example

A 4-inch trunk in an average heated room drinks about 4 quarts a day. A 6-quart stand therefore needs topping up roughly every 1.5 days — and since the rule suggests at least 4 quarts of capacity for a 4-inch trunk, a 6-quart stand comfortably clears the minimum.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does a Christmas tree need?

A common guideline is about 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter per day, so a 4-inch trunk drinks roughly 4 quarts daily. Uptake is highest in the first days after the tree is set up and in warm, dry rooms.

What happens if the stand runs dry?

Once the water drops below the cut, the trunk seals over with sap within a few hours and can no longer absorb water — after that, even refilling will not fully revive it. Keeping the reservoir topped up is the single most important thing for needle retention and fire safety.

Do additives or sugar help?

Research consistently finds that plain, fresh water works as well as commercial additives, aspirin or sugar. The key is simply never letting the water level fall below the cut end of the trunk.
