Closet Rod Length Calculator
Add up how much hanging rod your wardrobe needs from the number of shirts, pants and dresses or suits you hang.
How it works
Rod length (in) = shirts × 1 + pants × 1.25 + dresses/suits × 2 · Feet = inches ÷ 12
Each garment occupies a predictable slice of rod: shirts on standard hangers take about an inch, hung trousers a little more, and bulkier dresses, suits and coats around two inches. Multiplying each count by its width and adding them gives the minimum rod length. Add a little slack on top so clothes are not crammed and stay wrinkle-free.
Worked example
20 shirts (20 in) + 10 pants (12.5 in) + 5 suits (10 in) = 42.5 inches, or about 3.5 feet of rod for 35 garments.
Frequently asked questions
How many clothes fit per foot of closet rod?
Roughly 10 to 12 shirts, or about 6 bulky items like coats, fit in a foot of rod. This calculator uses per-garment widths so a mix of items totals correctly.
Should I add extra rod length?
Yes — add 10 to 20% so garments hang loosely and air can circulate. Cramming a rod full leads to wrinkles and makes it hard to see what you own.
