How it works

Checkout = price × (1 − store%) × (1 − coupon%) − flat coupon · Net = checkout − checkout × cashback%

Percentage discounts multiply rather than add: 20% then 10% off is not 30% off but 28%, because the second cut applies to an already-reduced price. Flat-dollar coupons are best applied after the percentages so they come off a smaller base, and cashback is earned on what you actually pay at checkout. Modelling the real order of operations shows the true stacked price instead of a misleadingly large headline sum.

Worked example

$100 with 20% off is $80; a further 10% coupon makes $72; a $5 flat coupon brings checkout to $67. At 3% cashback you get $2.01 back, for a net $64.99 — a 35.0% effective discount, not the 38% you would get by naively adding the offers.

Frequently asked questions

Do stacked percentage discounts add up?

No. 20% off then 10% off leaves 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 of the price, a 28% discount, not 30%. Each percentage applies to the running total, so stacked percentages always total less than their sum.

What order should discounts be applied in?

Percentages first, then flat-dollar coupons, then cashback on the final paid amount. Flat coupons save you the same dollars regardless of order, but applying them last maximizes any percentage taken before them.

Is cashback the same as a discount?

Nearly — it lowers your effective cost — but it arrives later and is calculated on what you paid, not the original price. This calculator counts it toward total savings while showing the checkout price separately.
