Sale Price Calculator
Find the final price after a percentage discount, how much you save, and the price with sales tax added.
How it works
Savings = price × discount% · Sale price = price − savings · Final = sale × (1 + tax%)
The discount is a percentage of the original price, subtracted to give the sale price; sales tax, if any, is then added on the discounted amount. Tax is charged on what you actually pay, so a coupon lowers both the price and the tax. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add — an extra 20% off an already 30%-off tag is 0.70 × 0.80 = 56% of the original, a 44% total reduction, not 50%.
Worked example
A $79.99 item at 25% off saves 79.99 × 0.25 = $20.00, so the sale price is $59.99. With no tax entered, that is the final price; add 7% tax and it becomes 59.99 × 1.07 = $64.19.
Frequently asked questions
How do I stack two discounts?
Apply them one after another, not by adding the percentages. An item 30% off with an extra 20% off is 0.70 × 0.80 = 56% of the original price — a 44% total discount, not 50%.
Is tax charged before or after the discount?
After. Sales tax is applied to the discounted price you actually pay, so a store coupon reduces the tax too. Manufacturer rebates sometimes work differently, but in-store discounts lower the taxable amount.
What discount gets me to a target price?
Divide the amount off by the original price. To sell an $80 item for $60 you need $20 off, and 20 ÷ 80 = 25% off.
