How it works
Sale price = price × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂)
Each discount multiplies the running price. Stacked discounts do NOT add: 25% off then an extra 10% off is 32.5% total, not 35%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Worked example
An $80 jacket at 25% off is $60. An extra 10% off clearance brings it to $54 — a 32.5% total discount, saving $26.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t 25% + 10% = 35% off?
The second discount is taken from the reduced price, not the original. Multiply the remaining fractions: 0.75 × 0.90 = 0.675, so you pay 67.5%.
How do I compare "$15 off" vs "20% off"?
Convert the dollar discount to a percent of the price (15 ÷ price × 100) and take the larger one.
Is tax charged on the discounted price?
In the US, yes — sales tax applies to the price actually paid after store discounts.
