How it works

Labor = hours × hourly rate · Price = (materials + labor) × (1 + profit markup %) · Quick rule: price = 3 × materials

Crochet and knitting take many hours, so the quick “3 × materials” rule often pays the maker only a few dollars an hour. The labor-based method charges for materials and every hour of work at a fair rate, then adds a profit markup for the business itself — fees, tools, photos and growth. Comparing both shows whether a pattern can be sold profitably at all; slow, low-materials items may need a higher price, a faster pattern or a place in a premium market.

Worked example

A crochet blanket uses $24.00 of yarn and notions and takes 8 hours. At $15 an hour labor is $120.00, so cost is $144.00; adding a 20% profit markup gives a price of $172.80, which pays $18.60 an hour after materials. The 3 × materials rule would give only $72.00 — $6.00 an hour.

Frequently asked questions

How do you price crochet items?

Add the cost of yarn and notions to your hours multiplied by an hourly rate, then add a profit margin of about 10–30%. Check the result against similar handmade items and adjust the pattern or market if it is far above what buyers pay.

Is 3 times the cost of yarn a good price?

It is a quick starting point but often too low for large or detailed pieces, because it ignores time. A 20-hour amigurumi with 10 of yarn priced at 30 pays almost nothing per hour.

What hourly rate should I use for crochet?

At least your local minimum wage, and more for complex or custom work. Many makers start around 10–20 per hour and raise it as their speed and reputation grow.

How can I make crochet more profitable?

Sell smaller, faster items alongside big pieces, buy yarn in bulk, sell patterns as digital products and offer custom orders at a premium.
