How it works

Price = (cost + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee% − target margin%) · Fees = fee% × price + fixed · Profit = price − cost − fees

Etsy pricing is circular: the transaction and payment fees are percentages of the final price, but the final price is what you are solving for. Rearranging the algebra gives a direct formula — cost plus fixed fees, divided by one minus the combined fee rate and your target margin. This lands the exact price that leaves your desired margin after every fee, instead of the too-low number you get by tacking a markup onto cost and forgetting the percentage fees.

Worked example

For $8 of goods, a 6.5% transaction fee, a 3% payment fee, $0.45 of fixed fees and a 30% target margin: price = (8 + 0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − 0.30) = 8.45 ÷ 0.605 = $13.97. Fees come to $1.78, leaving $4.19 profit — exactly a 30% margin.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I just add my margin to the cost?

Because Etsy’s percentage fees are charged on the final price, not on cost. If you mark up cost and ignore that the fees scale with price, the fees eat into your margin and you land below target. Solving for price with the fees built in is the only way to hit the margin exactly.

What fixed fees should I enter?

Combine the per-listing fee (about $0.20) with the fixed portion of the payment processing charge (often around $0.25), for roughly $0.45 total. Adjust for your country’s payment fees, and if you factor in shipping or offsite ad fees, add those to the cost or fixed fields accordingly.

Does this include Etsy Offsite Ads or shipping?

Not by default. Offsite Ads (a 12–15% fee on attributed orders) apply only to some sales, so many sellers price for the base fees and treat Offsite Ads as an occasional extra. To be conservative, raise the transaction-fee input to bake in an average offsite-ad cost.
