How it works

Order total = price + shipping charged · Fees = $0.20 listing + 6.5%×order + (3%×order + $0.25) + optional 15% Offsite Ads · Net profit = price + shipping charged − item cost − actual shipping − fees

Most Etsy “profit” calculators stop at the platform fees and forget the two costs that quietly eat sellers alive: your materials and the gap between what you charge for shipping and what postage plus packaging actually costs you. This tool folds in all of it. Etsy charges a flat $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus the shipping you charge, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25; if the sale came through Offsite Ads, add 15% of the whole order. Then it subtracts your real shipping cost — not the amount you charged — so the number you see is what genuinely lands in your pocket.

Worked example

A $25 item that costs $6 in materials, shipping charged $5 but actually costing $6: order total is $30. Etsy fees are $0.20 listing + $1.95 transaction (6.5% of $30) + $1.15 processing (3% + $0.25) = $3.30. Net profit = 25 + 5 − 6 − 6 − 3.30 = $14.70, a 49.0% margin — and you quietly ate $1 on shipping. Turn on 15% Offsite Ads and fees jump to $7.80, dropping profit to $10.20.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Etsy profit lower than a basic fee calculator shows?

Because basic tools subtract only Etsy’s fees. Your real costs also include materials and the true cost of shipping, which is frequently higher than the shipping you charge the buyer. This calculator subtracts your actual postage-plus-packaging cost, so a listing that looks profitable on fees alone can still lose money once shipping is honest.

Does Etsy charge fees on the shipping I collect?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment-processing fee both apply to the item price plus the shipping you charge, not the item price alone. That is why raising shipping to cover postage does not fully solve the problem — Etsy takes a cut of that shipping too.

When does the 15% Offsite Ads fee apply?

Only when a buyer reaches your listing through an Etsy-placed ad off the platform and then buys. Shops under $10,000 in the trailing year pay 15% and may opt out; larger shops pay 12% and cannot. It never applies to ordinary organic sales, so leave it at None for those.
