How it works

Coins = Σ (amount ÷ priceₜ) assuming a linear price path · Final value = coins × end price · Avg cost = invested ÷ coins

Dollar-cost averaging buys a fixed dollar amount each period, so you automatically acquire more coins when the price is low and fewer when it is high. This calculator assumes the price glides linearly from start to end across your periods — a simplified path, not real historical prices — and sums the coins bought at each step. The key insight it shows is that your average cost sits below the simple midpoint of start and end price, which is exactly why DCA smooths out entry timing.

Worked example

Invest $100 for 12 periods while price rises linearly from $20,000 to $40,000. Because early buys are cheaper, you accumulate ≈0.0416 coins for $1,200. At the $40,000 end price that is worth ≈$1,665, a ≈39% gain, with an average cost near $28,900 — below the $30,000 midpoint.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real historical backtest?

No — it models a smooth, linear price path between your start and end prices for simplicity. Real markets zig-zag, so actual DCA results depend on the exact path. Use this to understand the mechanics, not to predict a specific coin’s past.

Why is my average cost below the midpoint price?

Because a fixed dollar amount buys more coins when prices are low. Those extra cheap coins pull your weighted average cost below the simple average of the start and end price — the core benefit of DCA.

Does DCA beat investing all at once?

Not always. In a steadily rising market a lump sum invested early wins because it is fully exposed sooner. DCA’s advantage is reducing the risk of buying everything at a peak and smoothing the emotional side of volatile assets.
