Crypto Profit / Loss Calculator
Work out the real profit or loss on a crypto trade after entry, exit and exchange fees — with the exact percentage return on your capital.
How it works
Cost = buy × qty × (1 + fee) · Proceeds = sell × qty × (1 − fee) · P/L = proceeds − cost · Return % = P/L ÷ cost × 100
Your true profit is the cash you get back minus the cash you laid out, and both sides are eaten into by exchange fees. Fees are charged on the buy and again on the sell, so a headline price gain always overstates the return you actually keep. Measuring the profit against your real cost — the purchase plus its fee — gives the honest percentage return on the money you risked.
Worked example
Buy 0.5 BTC at $20,000 with a 0.2% fee: cost is 20,000 × 0.5 × 1.002 = $10,020. Sell at $30,000: proceeds are 30,000 × 0.5 × 0.998 = $14,970. Profit is $4,950, a 49.4% return on the $10,020 at risk.
Frequently asked questions
Do the fees really matter that much?
On a single trade a 0.2% fee is small, but it is charged twice — once to enter and once to exit — and it compounds if you trade frequently. For active traders, fees can quietly turn a marginally profitable strategy into a losing one.
Is this profit taxable?
In most countries crypto sold at a gain is a taxable capital gain, and the holding period often changes the rate. This tool computes the raw trade result only — check your local tax rules or a professional for what you owe.
What if I bought at several different prices?
Use your average cost per coin as the buy price. The crypto average-down and dollar-cost-averaging calculators can work that blended entry out for you.
