Crypto Unit Converter
Convert between Ethereum units (wei, gwei, ether) and Bitcoin units (satoshi, bit, mBTC, bitcoin) exactly, with no rounding or scientific notation.
How it works
Result = amount × 10^(from exponent − to exponent) · Ethereum: wei 10⁰, gwei 10⁹, ether 10¹⁸ · Bitcoin: satoshi 10⁰, bit 10², mBTC 10⁵, bitcoin 10⁸
Cryptocurrency amounts are defined as whole numbers of a tiny base unit — wei on Ethereum, satoshi on Bitcoin — and every named unit is simply a fixed power of ten of that base. One ether is 10¹⁸ wei; one gwei (used for gas fees) is 10⁹ wei; one bitcoin is 10⁸ satoshi. Because the ratios are exact powers of ten, converting is just sliding the decimal point, which this tool does on the number’s digits directly rather than with floating-point multiplication — so even an amount like one ether in wei (a 19-digit number) comes out exact, with no rounding error or scientific notation.
Worked example
1 ether shifts left 18 − 9 = 9 places to give 1,000,000,000 gwei, and 18 places to give 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei (the base unit). On Bitcoin, 1 bitcoin is 10⁸ = 100,000,000 satoshi, and 1 bit (µBTC) is 100 satoshi.
Frequently asked questions
What is gwei used for?
Gwei (10⁹ wei, or a billionth of an ether) is the standard unit for Ethereum gas prices, because raw wei values are unwieldy and whole ether is too large. A gas price quoted as "20 gwei" is 20 × 10⁹ = 20,000,000,000 wei per unit of gas.
Why avoid scientific notation and floating point?
A value like 1 ether in wei is 10¹⁸ — beyond the range where JavaScript floating-point numbers stay exact, and normally printed as "1e+18". This converter shifts the decimal point on the digit string instead, so large and small amounts convert exactly and display in full, which matters when the value is money.
Can I convert between Ethereum and Bitcoin units here?
No — those are separate chains with no fixed ratio, and any exchange rate between ETH and BTC floats with the market. This tool only converts denominations within one chain (wei↔ether, satoshi↔bitcoin), which are exact by definition.
